Peter Fruchter, M.A., LL.B.
Profile

Peter Fruchter, M.A., LL.B. is a retired lawyer and philosopher of science who teaches at York University as a part-time faculty member in the Division of Humanities, Faculty of Arts. Areas of teaching focus include the history and philosphy of science, culture & technology, and the philosophy of law.

Peter completed an undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Waterloo before studying law at York University's Osgoode Hall Law School. At graduation he was the winner of the Rogers, Bereskin & Parr prize in intellectual property law. Peter was called to the Ontario bar in 1991 and practiced law before concluding that the practice of law was inconsistent with justice. Peter returned to York to complete a master's degree in Philosophy. His thesis, "Scientific Explanation and the Deductive-Nomological Model: Historical Perspective, the Modern View and a Defence" interrogated Popperian criteria of explanation in the philosophy of science. Peter pursued PhD studies in the philosophy of science at the University of Western Ontario, interrupting doctoral work to co-found an internet firm, publish articles on democracy and the internet, write and publish poetry, busk, work as a bicycle courier, serve as a notary public, and accumulate and manage real estate holdings.

Currently, Peter is completing a manuscript advancing a new theory of discourse seeking to clearly distinguish truths of nature from the nature of truth. To read and comment on portions of this manuscript, please click on the Truth and Integrity link.

Peter is married to environmental phenomenologist and geographer Amy Lavender Harris (also known as Muse). They live in the West Toronto Junction area.
