Amy
Lavender Harris, B.A. (Hons.), M.PL.
Profile I am an environmental phenomenologist and geographer and teach at York University as a part-time faculty member (click here to view my academic curriculum vitae). I received my Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography and Literature from Queen's University in 1995, and completed a Master of Urban and Regional Planning (M.PL.) degree, also at Queen's, in 1997. Between 1997 and 2004 I conducted PhD research in environmental philosophy as a student in the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University. I withdrew from PhD studies in 2004 to pursue further graduate work in labour relations at the University of Toronto, and completed a Master of Industrial Relations (M.IR.) degree in 2006. My scholarly work focuses on environmental crisis, phenomenology, dwelling, finitude, and nature: a discussion of this work and some links are provided in the Scholarly Work section of this web site; please see also the research weblog I maintain, The Ivory Tunnel. I am also the originator and shepherd of the Imagining Toronto project, a manuscript-in-progress and new undergraduate geography course exploring intersections of literature and place in the Toronto region. I am a trained negotiator and experienced labour leader. I am the former President of CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) Local 3903, and in addition to negotiating three collective agreements on behalf of the Local, have served the union in virtually every capacity, including as a Steward, picket captain during a 78 day strike, and as CUPE representative on the York University Senate. Please click here to view my labour relations curriculum vitae. Prior to (and in some cases concurrent with) engaging in the above activities, I worked for nine years as an urban planner with the Town of Gananoque, (located along the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands). Before that, I served as a civilian instructor with the Princess of Wales Own Regiment in Kingston, teaching outdoor survival and map and compass skills to army cadets. Until 1991 I worked as a newspaper columnist and journalist, writing weekly columns for the Oshawa Times, the Ajax-Pickering News Advertiser, the Pickering Bay News, and (later) the Gananoque Reporter, and publishing free-lance work in these newspapers as well as the Kingston Whig-Standard (for which, on one occasion, I was chased through the woods by the OPP). I also hosted a very amateurish television show on Ajax community cable in 1989-1990. *
In my private life, I read voraciously and write voluminous
quantities
of analysis, speculation, introspection, and lyrical prose. Although so
much of my professional work has focused on various forms of writing
and
the interpretation of texts, in my personal work I feel I have
undertaken
a long apprenticeship and only now am learning to truly speak. Very
much
of my writing is influenced by a sense of belonging to the turning of
seasons,
a sense emerging from having spent so much time as a child listening to
and dreaming of the woods. Some of this work is available at Outer Sanctum. |
Muse is known to be fiercely
independent, curious, principled, and persistent.
